about

I am Meat is the title track of the self-titled album, but is the result of various stages of growth.

To hear David Gadsdon's views on it listen to this interview: meatiam.blogspot.com/2014/01/2013-interview-with-david-gadsdon-and.html

Originally it was written and recorded in an earlier minimal version when the band wore the name Protagonists of David Gadsdon. That was a duet for improvised saxophone, with voice injected through a guitar amp. Gardyloo Spew played saxophone in the wardrobe where she sat on a stool in the dark. Spew made the most of it, blowing her heart out for a good ten minutes, proceeding to get overheated and in need of air.

The next stage was a structured improvisation with David Gadsdon, Kazuya Ohtani playing tensely on an old battered piano and Jonas Golland playing drums. The initial riff on the bass notes, in its own right delivered the text from the voice of a friend chicken encouraging consumption. Spew joined in for later rehearsals, commenting and beng the nearest thing to a struggle for dear life in the room, through her reed.

When this phone recording was sped up digitally years later, it was surprisingly in 9/8 time, limping with the extra half beat on common time. The decision to make it heavy was unanimous with bassist Cos Chapman, given the band's proclivity for slow and grinding dirge-like recitatives.

I am Meat London, UK

Guitarless punk with multifaceted vocals, sax, bass and drums, variety of unortodox grooves since April 2011. "quintessential English colonialist surreal humour in a Vivian Stanshall meets Diz Willis kind of way."
-Idwal Fisher, 2011. With David Gadsdon, Gardyloo Spew, Cos Chapman and Jonas Golland. Formerly Protagonists of David Gadsdon. A rugged antidote to nu-jazz, sometimes labelled comedy.
